At the End of Year 2019
To most if not all people in Hong Kong, this year can be referred to as Annus horribilis.
The resistance movement has changed the way of life in this small city irrevocably, and the changes in our previous values and norms were drastic and unimaginable.
Whether you like it or not, everyone was drawn into this wheel of history in some way or the other.
In the closing of this tragic year, we must remember the suffering of the wounded, bereaved, and the imprisoned. Those who have lost loved ones or been parted from them do need our comfort to their sorrows. They are sacrificing for the sake of our common good in our true life.
I have confidence in the people in Hong Kong. With your courage, strength and good heart, we shall overcome the perils that lie ahead in the coming year. We come from the same family circle, and our ties have been knit closer by danger. In the face of adversity, this newfound spirit of unity and fellowship will continue into the next decade, creating a world of free men and women, untouched by tyranny.
We cannot expect the world, so grievously wounded, to recover quickly, but its convalescence can certainly be hastened by our continued endurance and goodwill.
To keep going forward, our eyes should fix on the far-off, delectable mountains of goal and good will. Whatever comes or does not come, don’t be afraid. Everyone of you need to bear some as your burden, even if it seems insurmountable. If everybody think it is somebody’s then it is nobody’s.
After all, if our world is to survive in any sense that makes survival worthwhile, we must learn to love and not to hate, and to create and not destroy.
Change might be bewildering, it is important to hold on to ageless ideals and values. With courage, stand up for what is right, true and honest.
“Large leaps are brought about by small steps,” said Queen Elizabeth in her Christmas message a few days ago. “It is often those small steps that overcome long-held differences and deep-seated divisions to bring harmony and understanding.”
It is small steps, not the giant leaps that bring lasting change in the world. On our own, we cannot end wars or wipe out injustice, but the cumulative impact of thousands of small acts of goodness can be bigger than we imagine.
Fight for freedom, stand with Hong Kong.
